CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the DOST Central Luzon, conducted the DOST SINAG Virtual Center Integration Training for participants from the Cagayan Valley Region on July 13–16, 2026 at the DOST Central Luzon Regional Office. The four-day capacity-building program aimed to strengthen digital agriculture initiatives by equipping participants with knowledge and practical skills in crop monitoring, disaster risk mapping, advisory generation, geospatial technologies, and agricultural communication.
The training formed part of DOST SINAG's continuing efforts to integrate science-based and data-driven technologies into agricultural planning and decision-making. Through the DOST SINAG Virtual Hub, participants were introduced to digital tools that support climate-resilient farming, improve agricultural productivity, and enhance the delivery of timely information to farmers and local government units (LGUs).
The first day focused on establishing the foundations of digital agriculture. Participants were introduced to the DOST-SINAG Virtual Center framework and its role in supporting sustainable agricultural development through science and technology. Discussions emphasized the importance of digital agriculture in addressing challenges such as climate variability, resource management, and crop productivity.
Participants were also oriented on the navigation and functionalities of the DOST-SINAG Virtual Hub, where they explored its crop monitoring, advisory generation, and integration features. The hands-on sessions enabled participants to understand how the platform can be applied to address real-world agricultural concerns within their respective areas.
On the second day, participants underwent advanced technical training on AgriSense Vegetation Analysis, Crop Stage Monitoring, Remote Sensing, and Crop Monitoring technologies. The sessions demonstrated how satellite imagery and geospatial data can be used to monitor crop conditions, forecast yields, and detect agricultural risks across large farming areas.
Participants likewise learned to generate Agricultural Disaster Risk Maps to identify vulnerable areas and support disaster preparedness efforts. A dedicated session on Google Earth Engine (GEE) Applications introduced participants to cloud-based geospatial analysis, allowing them to assess land cover changes and evaluate crop conditions using actual datasets from the Cagayan Valley Region through guided practical exercises.
The third day shifted its focus toward agricultural advisory development and science communication. Participants learned how to prepare timely, data-driven crop advisories that translate technical information into practical recommendations for farmers.
The sessions also covered the principles of effective agricultural communication, emphasizing clarity, accuracy, and accessibility in disseminating scientific information. Discussions on the DOST SINAG Branding Guidelines, publication material development, and social media caption writing further strengthened participants' capacity to communicate agricultural information effectively across various platforms.
The final day highlighted the preparation of agricultural reports and the assessment of agricultural risks associated with typhoons. Participants were guided in consolidating geospatial and agricultural data into comprehensive reports that can support farmers, LGUs, and policymakers in planning and decision-making.
The discussions underscored the importance of timely reporting and evidence-based recommendations in improving disaster preparedness and response, particularly in regions vulnerable to extreme weather events. By integrating digital agriculture tools into reporting processes, participants gained practical strategies for producing localized, science-based information that supports resilient farming communities.
Through the four-day integration training, participants enhanced both their technical competencies and communication skills, enabling them to maximize the capabilities of the DOST SINAG Virtual Hub in serving their respective provinces.
By strengthening the capacity of regional implementers, the DOST SINAG Virtual Center continues to bridge science, technology, and agriculture, empowering farmers and LGUs with reliable digital tools that support informed decision-making, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural development in the Cagayan Valley Region.
